Kai's Heart Story
By Sara Lawrence
Kai Moore was born 1/13/2026.
Kai’s story didn’t start the way we thought it would.
When he was born, we held him for the first time with nothing but love and joy.
There was no diagnosis. No warning.
Just our baby boy… finally here.
We didn’t know in that moment that everything was about to change.
Not long after, something felt off.
Little things… things we couldn’t explain, but couldn’t shake either.
That quiet feeling turned into questions. And those questions turned into words that no parent is ever prepared to hear.
Congenital heart disease...CHD.
In an instant, our world shattered and rebuilt into something we didn’t recognize.
Instead of going home, we were thrown into the NICU…then the PCICU.
A place filled with machines, wires, monitors, alarms—and a kind of fear that never really leaves your body, watching the machines do his breathing, giving his heart rest.
We learned how to read numbers instead of just watching our baby breathe.
We learned how to sit beside him and pray through the silence, through the beeping, through the unknown.
We watched our newborn fight in ways no baby ever should have to. It’s definitely one scary world, but never something to take lightly.
At just 6 weeks old…our tiny baby had open heart surgery.
Six weeks.
While other babies were being rocked to sleep at home, we were handing ours over to surgeons…hoping, praying, begging that we would get him back.
There are no words for that kind of fear.
No way to explain what it feels like to stand there, completely helpless… while your baby fights for his life.
There were nights we didn’t sleep.
Moments we felt like we were breaking in a hundred quiet ways.
Moments where all we could do was hold his hand and hope it was enough.
But through it all… there was Kai.
So small. So fragile.
And yet, stronger than anyone we’ve ever known.
He fought.
Every single day.
Through the pain, through the procedures, through the unknown—he kept going.
And somehow, he taught us how to keep going too.
This journey has been the hardest thing we’ve ever walked through.
It has changed us in ways we never expected.
But it has also shown us a kind of love that runs deeper than fear.
A strength we didn’t know we had.
And a little boy who redefined what it means to be a fighter.
Kai is our heart warrior.
And this page holds his story—the heartbreak, the fear, the fight, the healing…and every single moment in between.
We share this not just for him…but for every family walking a path like this.
So they know they’re not alone.
His story is still being written.
And we are so incredibly grateful he’s still here to write it.
Now we have our little boy home as of 3/16/2026. He’s home with his big brother, mom and dad and loved by so many!
