Progression of ventricular mass and morphology and conotruncal volume with gestation: a study of normal and abnormal fetal hearts with three and 4D ultrasound

Dr. Baht and colleagues plan to quatitate aspects of fetal cardiac chamber sizes using new three-dimensional and four-dimensional echocardiographic techniques. They will study 400 fetal echocardiogram studies at two large referral centers- Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).

The senior investigators working with Dr. Bhat are two leaders in the field of fetal echocardiography, Dr. David Sahn and Dr. Lisa Hornberger. The investigators will establish normative data from myocardial volumes and masses, as well as normative data for outflow tract volumes and other measurements of fetal cardiac morphology.

The pitfalls and assumptions associated with the standard (older) two-dimensional echocardiography will hopefully be eliminated by the use of cutting edge 3D and 4D techniques. Further quantifying these fetal hearts will help our understanding of the development of congenital heart defects.
