MacKinzie Kline
A Warrior in the Battle Against Congenital Heart Defects
In 2002, when she was just ten years old, MacKinzie Jean Kline became our National Spokesperson. Mac, as she is known to her family and friends, was born with a very complex congenital heart defect. Her defect was so severe that she had to undergo two separate surgeries before she was two years old, the first at only eleven weeks. Because of Mac's heart defect she is unable to play aerobic sports. When she was five years old her doctors told her parents that she could not do "anything more aerobic than golf". At six, Mac had her first golf lesson - it just so happened she was a prodigy.
Mac has won countless international, state and local championships in the short time she's been playing and has a handicap of 1.2. She has written a book, "Mac's Secret Weapon", has been interviewed on numerous television and news shows as well as in print and has become a favorite of both John Daly and Phil Mickelson.
While this is amazing for a healthy fifteen year old, let alone someone with a heart defect, the most incredible thing about Mac is her goal in life: to raise $1 million for congenital heart defect research. In the eight years since she's been our spokesperson, she has already acheived her goal of raising $1 million! Mac knows that had she been born just ten years earlier she likely would not have survived. Grateful for the gift of life progress made through research has given her, Mac tells her amazing story to everyone she meets.
